Osinbajo Calls For Innovative Approach To Family Planning
Date Posted: 06/Dec/2018
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has called for possible innovative approach to family planning in a bid to implement evidence-based approaches to population management.
Osinbajo made the call in Abuja during the opening ceremony of the 5th Nigeria family planning conference organised by Association for the Advancement of Family Planning (AAFP), in collaboration with the federal Ministry of Health.
The Vice President who was represented by the minister of health, Prof Isaac Adewole, said the present administration remains committed to taking bold steps to transform Nigeria from a nation of promise and potential into one of the most productive economies in the world.
He said, “To achieve this, we will take advantage of all opportunities at our disposal, prioritise women young people in policies.
According to him, “Family planning and population management generally are not lifesaving interventions but critical tools for economic and social development.
“Investing in family planning has been proven to be smart, cost effective, and lifesaving especially in Nigeria with a very young and rapidly growing population.”
He however commended the ministry of health, AAFP, and other donor agencies for their continuous support and investment in family planning.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Chairman, Local Organising Committee of the conference, Dr Ejike Oji, explained that the purpose of the conference is to seek ways and means of advancing efforts in providing the needed services to citizens and seek to reduce maternal deaths and disabilities.
“Family planning services is a right and the only way we can make sure women, girls and men too exercise. This right is to empower them to make those critical decisions based on their choices in an atmosphere free of coercion.
“We either harness the burgeoning youthful population we have now by providing adequate healthcare, appropriate and relevant education and creating an environment that create jobs for them together with reducing our fertility rate with the resultant prosperity that will go with all these or do nothing and face demographic doom,” he added.
