Ex-Boyfriend Of Nursing Student, 22, Suspected Of Murdering Her Before Fleeing The US For Nicaragua
Date Posted: 13/Mar/2018
A 22-year-old nursing student at Binghamton University who has been named as a person of interest in the killing of his former girlfriend and schoolmate is facing an indictment after escaping to Nicaragua. According to investigators, Orlando Tercero, a US citizen, fled the country before the body of 22-year-old Haley Anderson was discovered at an off-campus house on Friday.
Anderson, a senior at the public research university, was a few months away from graduation before she was found dead at a residence located on Oak Street during a welfare check, police in Binghamton said.
Broome County District Attorney Steve Cornwell said on Monday that his office plans to seek an indictment against Tercero from a grand jury, after which a warrant will be issued, clearing the way for an extradition request that will be presented to the government of Nicaragua, reported
An autopsy performed on Anderson has determined the the cause of death was a homicide. the manner of death has not been revealed. Police said Tercero 'had a previous domestic/romantic relationship' with the victim. The FBI is assisting the Binghamton police Department with this case, along with a half-dozen other agencies.
Tercero's Facebook posts indicate that he has ties to Nicaragua and had last visited the country in July 2017. His final status update, dated December 21, 2017, consisted of a video promoting travel in Nicaragua. His account further reveals that he grew up and attended high school in Miami, at one point attended a religious college in Bogota, Columbia, and enrolled at Binghamton University in 2016.

Her co-worker, Athena Anadnostakos, who worked with her for years at Jazzman's Cafe on campus, spoke highly of the late student in a statement to Fox 40.

'She was a very good girl. She was friendly, joked around... we had a good time together,' Anadnostakos told the news station. 'Everybody is sad... a lot of students came to New York together and they cried today. They were all so close, she said, in tears.
Tercero has been described as an ex-lover of Anderson's. He is also a nursing student at Binghamton University.
Anderson told Anadnostakos she decided to stay at school for spring break. That was the last time Anadnostakos saw her. Anderson's Facebook profile states she was currently 'single'. She last publicly listed she was in a relationship in 2016.
On Friday night, the university shared a lengthy condolence message to their page.
'The Binghamton University community is deeply saddened to learn of the death of senior nursing student Haley Anderson, whose death is being investigated by the Binghamton Police Department,' the post read in part. 'There is no threat to public safety at this time. The investigation is continuing at this hour. Anyone with information can contact the Binghamton Police Detective Division at 607-772-7080 or 607-772-7082.'
The message said further: 'Our entire University community extends our deepest condolences to Haley’s family and friends, both here in Binghamton and in her hometown of Westbury, N.Y.'
The university is also offering counseling services to students and faculty during this trying time.
Further investigation into the homicide case is currently underway.
